Ingredients:
1 cup scalded milk
2 Tbsp shortening
1 egg
1 tsp salt
2 Tbsp + 1 tsp sugar
½ cup warm water
1 Tbsp (or packet) yeast
3½ cups of white flour
Method:
Scald 1 cup of milk (heat in a sauce pan just to about boiling). Combine milk, shortening, egg, sugar and salt in a large bowl; then cool to lukewarm.
Dissolve 1 teaspoon of sugar into ½ cup warm water; sprinkle yeast over this. Once yeast has risen, add to milk mixture.
Beat and stir in approx. 3½ cups of white flour. Knead. Cover with a tea towel and let rise until double in bulk.
Punch down, knead and shape into rolls. Let rise again.
Bake at 400°F for 10-15 minutes.
